The cannabis industry is bustling and exploding. And that means there are always jobs to be had.

If you’re considering a job in cannabis, you might think that means working in a dispensary. And maybe that idea doesn’t exactly rock your world.

The good news is, there’s a lot of diversity for cannabis career options. That means you’ve got plenty of non-dispensary cannabis job options.

A Veritable Slew of Non-Dispensary Cannabis Job Options!

It turns out you can make a pretty solid living in the marijuana industry. And you never have to step a foot into a dispensary (unless you want to buy some product, of course).

We’ll take a look at seven different options here.

Security

Where there’s marijuana, there’s money. And that means cannabis businesses are more than willing to pay for protection. It’s not just at dispensaries either.

Cultivation centers need folks in security to keep their products safe and ward off potential theft. So if you have a background in security, law enforcement, or military, you could find a great position in cannabis security.

Marijuana Edibles Chef

You don’t have to be a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu to get a job as a marijuana edibles chef. Of course, you do need to have established culinary skills and an understanding of both the nature and legalities of cooking or baking with cannabis.

Marijuana edibles chef is one of the most creatively driven jobs in the cannabis industry. So if you can imagine yourself conjuring cannabis-infused delicacies for events, private clients, and brands, then this could be the job for you.

Marketing and Public Relations

If you live in a state where cannabis is legal both medically and recreationally, you could make a good living as a cannabis marketing and public relations expert.

Folks in this sector are familiar with the (sometimes suffocating) rules and regulations for advertising a federally illegal substance. So that means you’ll need to educate yourself on these as well.

But if you have a marketing background and are well connected, great cannabis marketing specialists are in high demand.

Cultivation Site Worker

Are you a bit of a plant person but far from a master gardener? If so, you may enjoy working on the cultivation side of the industry. There are plenty of entry-level positions at cultivation sites that allow for you to expand your skills as you work your way up the career ladder. Over time, you may even achieve the role of Assistant Grower.

Master Grower/Botanical Specialist

At the higher end of jobs in the cultivation sector, there’s always a need for people with either a degree in horticulture or years of experience growing weed legally. Cultivation sites need Master Growers and are willing to pay them well to grow plants while effectively working with compliance inspectors and law enforcement.

Lab Staff/Tech

For the more science-minded, specialized laboratories are seeking testers who can assess the safety and quality of products that are intended for consumers. This is an area in the cannabis industry that’s growing by leaps and bounds. So there are a wealth of opportunities.

Extraction Tech

Finally, laboratories are also in need of trained professionals who are capable of performing a specialized process to create marijuana extracts. So if you’re REALLY into science and willing to go through the training, you could earn six figures! This is one of the most lucrative jobs in the industry.

Legal cannabis sales topped $12 billion last year. And they’re expected to top $30 billion annually within the next four years.

That’s certainly nothing to sneeze at.

Given marijuana’s wild popularity, it seems folks would be champing at the bit to work in the industry. So why is the Greenhouse offering bounty to new hires?

What’s Going on Here?

When owner Jerry Millen opened the dispensary doors to the Greenhouse of Walled Lake, he never dreamed he’d have challenges attracting and hiring new employees for his dispensary.

And like most of us, he also never imagined the country would face a pandemic.

Part of the issue is that cannabis businesses were placed in the category of essential businesses during the challenging year of 2020. That meant that unlike other industries that faced closing down, they were able to stay open and operational.

In addition, the stress around the pandemic drove up marijuana sales for those seeking some relief from what was being dubbed “the new normal.”

Companies like the Greenhouse that were in strong financial shape heading into the pandemic found themselves scrambling to hire additional workers in response to this robust demand for products.

Sounds Like the Perfect Situation, Right?

Nothing is perfect though.

While it was a blessing to be able to stay open while other businesses were going under, there were unique challenges that came with operating in the midst of a pandemic.

One was the fear of transmitting or spreading the potentially deadly virus. During the darkest days of the pandemic, provisioning centers were offering only curbside and delivery to keep people safe. Yet, many people were cautious to remain in their “social pods” and didn’t venture from them.

The second challenge was the ability of workers to collect unemployment. Again, while this has been a godsend for many who were and are trying to pay their bills, it has made it a challenge for businesses such as the Greenhouse who need able bodies back on the premises.

As jobless claims are on the increase, finding qualified workers continues to be a challenge. And Millen needs 20 qualified men and women into his store ASAP.

So Millen has come up with a solution.

Greenhouse Offering Bounty to New Hires

The preponderance of circumstances has left Millen’s stock rooms overflowing with product and not nearly enough employees to handle it.

So he is offering to pay a bounty of one ounce of cannabis (valued at $500) to new budtenders and other employees hired in the next 60 days.

This is on top of a competitive hourly wage.

“We need men and women who want to work in a great environment and be a part of one of Michigan’s fastest growing industries,” says Millen. “The Greenhouse of Walled Lake provides a great wage and an outstanding, fun work atmosphere. That’s why I am willing to pay this bounty to get the best people possible.”

How’s that for incentive?

Think You Might Be a Good Fit for the Greenhouse?

With the Greenhouse offering bounty to new hires, this could be the perfect time to get in (or BACK in) to the cannabis industry.

If you’re interested in joining the team, visit greenhousemi.com/apply. You can also email your resume to careers@greenhousemi.com.

Up to 400 cannabis-related jobs could be available soon in Pontiac, Michigan.

The community north of Detroit has had a dicey relationship in the past with favoring marijuana dispensaries or other businesses in their community.

Back in a 2018 election, Proposal 1 on the city’s ballot called for 20 medical marijuana dispensaries. It passed by a slim margin.

One person, actually.

Proposal 1 tallied 3,896 voting in favor of it and 3,895 voting against it. Now, just over a year later, we’re happy to say there’s a cannabis job fair to be held in Pontiac next week.

Cannabis Job Fair to Be Held in Pontiac on November 12th

Pharmaco Inc. is looking to quickly develop a cannabis park in Pontiac and they’re currently busy laying all the groundwork; which includes the need to fill between 300 and 400 positions.

This will provide amazing opportunities for those interested in working in the cannabis industry. Salaries will range from $15 to $18 per hour.

The cannabis park is set to feature a cultivation center and processing facility and even a grocery store. Developers are also planning for a dispensary.

If approved, the dispensary will be in the front of the plaza with the grocery store. The cultivation and processing will be in the rear of a new Rubicon Capital development inside the currently vacant Glenwood Plaza at 43 S. Glenwood.

This will be the location of the job fair as well.

Both Rubicon Capital and Pharmaco see Pontiac as a city that’s making a comeback and want to do what they can to increase commerce and create jobs.

They are looked upon favorably by the community as well. They have been responsible for distributing more than 40,000 pounds of food to residents of the city.

Their belief is that this development would make a significant and positive impact on the city and its residents – in spite of any of the old-school misinformed reservations (our words, not theirs) people may have about marijuana businesses in their communities.

Who Qualifies for This Job Fair?

Interested candidates must be at least 21 years of age to apply. And while applicants are encouraged to bring a resumé, it is not a requirement.

It should be noted that the majority of the jobs are expected to go to Pontiac residents. But candidates from other communities will not be excluded based on where they live.

In addition, candidates with cannabis-related convictions will get special consideration.

The job fair will run from 10am – 2pm on November 12th. It will be held at 43 S. Glenwood Avenue in Pontiac.

The Cannabis Jobs Keep Coming

The cannabis job fair to be held in Pontiac is just another encouraging sign of the inroads cannabis is making.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the city of Pontiac approves this amazing project. It could breathe a lot of new life into this very cool city.

And if you’re an aspiring cannabis business owner looking at Pontiac – or anywhere in Southeast Michigan – as a potential place to get your company going, contact us today.

Our expertise in cannabis marketing and public relations will give you the extra edge you need in this highly competitive industry.

The cannabis industry is growing fast. And that means there are many jobs to be had.

In fact, the legal cannabis industry in the United States has already created more than 211,000 full-time jobs across the country.

But it being such a new industry, in tandem with the nature of the product, there is some misunderstanding about how one should interview for a cannabis job.

As such, mistakes in interviewing for cannabis jobs have become pretty common place.

Yep. It turns out that selling weed in high school or college doesn’t exactly qualify you for a full-time gig in the cannabis industry.

Common Mistakes in Interviewing for Cannabis Jobs

If you’re considering applying for a job with a cannabis company, it’s important that you understand how much more competitive the industry is than it was in the past.

Yet, many candidates still don’t get this.

So just in case you’re thinking about interviewing for a cannabis job, we’ll take a look at three of the most common mistakes NOT to make – and what you should do instead.

1. Believing Your Love for Pot Will Land You the Job

It won’t.

Of course, having passion for the product will certainly help. Particularly if you’re planning to go into sales.

But the cannabis industry is no longer in its absolute infancy. And there are now plenty of people – CAPABLE people – who have the skill set required to fill open positions.

In other words, you can’t simply walk in and say, “Hey. I’ve never really worked in security before, but I’m hungry to get into the cannabis industry. So whadya say?” It might have worked five years ago, but it isn’t gonna fly today.

When going into an interview, be prepared to discuss the skills you have that make you uniquely qualified to work in the industry. And be willing to go beyond your job description.

There are still a lot of startups and new companies in the cannabis space that have flexibility. So if you’re someone who’s able to wear a lot of hats and remain enthusiastic, that could weigh pretty heavily.

It’s certainly going to carry more weight than simply expressing how much you love marijuana.

2. Assuming You Will Be Using the Product While at Work

“So, what’s your smoking policy?” Interestingly enough, CEOs of cannabis businesses are no strangers to this question during interviews.

The only thing that could make this question worse is if you added a “dude” to the end of it. So if you’re applying for a cannabis job, do NOT ask it.

When it comes to substance use – be it weed, alcohol, or any other mind-altering substance – the same rules apply in the cannabis industry as in any other. Employers expect their employees to have clear heads. So unless you need marijuana for medical reasons, don’t plan on smoking down all day.

But while you’re crossing that question off the list, there are others you might want to add.

In fact, since a slew of cannabis companies have complex business models, job coaches recommend that you come to the interview armed with questions. Intelligent questions.

For instance, ask the interviewer where in the supply chain the company is involved. (They may even be involved in multiple sides of it.) And given that the industry faces restrictions that others don’t, ask about their marketing strategies and what they’re doing to build brand awareness. Things like that.

Of course, the nature of your questions will depend to some extent on the position for which you’re applying. But any questions that demonstrate your curiosity while showcasing your skill set are going to be far more effective than asking about the smoking policy. Seriously.

3. Thinking Your Charm Is a Substitute for Being Prepared

Again, you’re interviewing for a job. And just as in any other industry, these are legitimate companies that are willing to pay you for services rendered.

Yet, a surprising number of candidates show up to cannabis company interviews late, unprepared, and even without a resumé. Rather than treating the interview with the seriousness it deserves, they act like they’re planning to chill out with Cheech and Chong.

If you have any inkling that you can swing in and dazzle the interviewer with just your smile and some knowledge of weed, you need to rethink that strategy. You’re not interviewing a new set of friends.

So along with the questions we mentioned above, be sure you have a resumé and a professional attitude.

Even if you don’t yet have much you can add to your resumé, remember that there is still flexibility in the industry. Showing that you’re eager to learn and capable of getting up to speed quickly will score you points.

Another thing that will score you points is keeping up with industry data. Research the status of legalization laws and regulations in your state. And avoid the words “pot” and “weed”.

Finally, attending trade shows and educational conferences is an effective way to show your genuine interest and commitment to learning. They’re also the perfect place to make contacts and network. The more good impressions you make, the better.

Get the Job You Deserve

That’s really it in a nutshell.

If you show up for the interview with a resumé, a professional attitude and pertinent questions, you’re much more likely to earn the position you seek.

But if you arrive to the interview wearing tie-dye, acting like a Deadhead stoner, and making the above mistakes in interviewing for cannabis jobs, you’re more likely to get a job flipping burgers. And even THAT’S a maybe.

Are you a cannabis business looking for great employees? It starts with building a great name for yourself. Contact us today to talk about your public relations and marketing needs. Then we’ll go from there.

We could quickly cut to the chase and say that virtually every skill is needed in the industry. But what kind of blog post would that be?

Honestly though, with this burgeoning industry still in its infancy, there really is need for a wealth of skills for cannabis jobs.

So whether you’re a newbie to the working world, a top executive in your industry, or somewhere in between (which would be most of us), if you’re interested in this industry, they’re interested in what you have to offer.

What Do Hiring Managers Want?

The cannabis industry is young. And it’s hungry for talent.

That makes it the perfect industry for younger people who are looking to get in on the ground level of a quickly growing industry.

The cool thing about younger applicants is their energy, willingness and enthusiasm. Hiring managers want people who are coachable and eager for new challenges and opportunities.

BUT, the cannabis industry is truly open to all ages. And hiring managers will happily welcome older applicants too who have the skills they seek.

Valuable Skills for the Cannabis Jobs

If you’re already established and experienced in another industry, then it’s all about reinventing yourself.

So even if you can’t boast experience in the cannabis industry on your resumé, odds are that you have transferable skills.

For example, if you have a background in finance, them emphasize that on your resumé. Every business is in need of accountants, controllers and CFOs who can help with cash flow and money issues.

By the same token, if you have experience in manufacturing and operations, you possess the skills that will help companies scale to meet the quickly growing demands.

Two other industries that hiring managers take notice of are:

Sales/Marketing

In states where marijuana is legal – particularly recreational – there is an explosion of businesses competing for market share.

If you’re a marketing expert with business development savvy, you will be in high demand. Cannabis companies are in critical need of marketing professionals who know how to build powerful relationships with major customers.

But even you don’t have the corner office in the world of marketing, B2B marketing staff and consumer marketing experts are also in demand for their skills.

Technology

From data scientists to experts in computer networking to machine-learning engineers, every industry has a need for IT folks.

But in the case of the cannabis industry, people coming out of tech with experience in a lab, extraction company or dispensary are a particularly hot commodity.

And if you spent any time in regulatory or compliance, you can only imagine how welcome those skills will be. (Very.)

Another big plus? The lack of age-ism which we discussed earlier. That means that seriously experienced tech executives with some years under their belts are embraced rather than looked over for more youthful upstarts.

So the bottom line is, if you’ve got some skills and are interested in the cannabis industry, it’s probably interested in you too.

But there are additional things you can do.

Get Educated

You might be thinking, how do I get an education in cannabis? (And we’re not talking about experimenting with it.)

It shouldn’t come as any big surprise that many top universities and institutions, as well as specialized continuing education companies, now offer classes and degrees in the cannabis industry.

So if you can afford to take a few courses, do it. Being able to add some cannabis education to your resumé indicates a passion for the business side of the industry.

Network (of Course)

Job boards are a great place to find cannabis companies looking for talent. And the number of job openings for this industry increases every day.

So take a chance and apply to any jobs that sound interesting. Cast your net far.

And if you’re fortunate enough to live in a state that’s just recently legalized marijuana, you can expect an influx of cannabis jobs that will need to be filled in the coming year.

Attend any meetings, conventions or events that will help you connect with others in the industry.

And finally, follow industry leaders on social media. If you’re able to provide them with useful information or connections, you’re bound to start making a name for yourself in the industry.

After all, so much of life is about who you know, as much as what you know. And the cannabis industry is no different.

Where Do You See Yourself in The Cannabis Industry?

If you feel confident that you have the skills for cannabis jobs and you’re ready to explore, then what are you waiting for? Now is the perfect time to get into this explosive industry.

And if you decide you want to start your own business, then contact us now to line up cannabis marketing experts.

Being a serious player in the cannabis industry is no joke.

Especially now as the industry is experiencing an explosive expansion. You gotta know how to play with fire.

As the industry continues to expand, there’s an increased calling for people who will be stewards to its growth. But these people have to have the know-how, experience and moxie to survive.

And working in the industry means more than just being a dispensary owner. Sure, that’s pretty awesome. But there are other cool jobs in the cannabis industry you may know nothing about.

A Look at Cool Jobs in the Cannabis Industry

With the exception of job #1, these jobs require skills and experience gained through other industries.

But it’s fascinating to see how this new industry is creating jobs wholly unique to it. And one of them might even be a consideration for you.

1. Budtender

When someone enters a dispensary, the budtender is often the first person they see. Though not (usually) in possession of a mystical staff or sporting long robes, think of them as the esteemed and wizened guides of the dispensary.

The budtender utilizes his or her knowledge of cannabis to guide customers and patients through consultations and to facilitate discussions about their needs. They’re also there to educate customers about the product and to lessen and ultimately remove any stigma around the plant.

If you’re a people person who’s a good listener and you’re the naturally curious type, you could land a job at a dispensary as a budtender. You don’t need to be a cannabis expert, but you should have basic knowledge under your belt and at your disposal.

2. Master Grower

So few are cut out for farming. It’s tough, grueling and often thankless work.

But some farmers who already have the practical skills and experience required to grow plants on a large-scale and commercial basis, are making the shift toward becoming master growers cultivating marijuana plants. And with some success.

If you’re considering this route, you should know it’s not all fun and games. Unless you consider cloning, climate, and light-cycle control; manipulating cannabinoids; water and nutrient scheduling; pest management; drying; product development and absolutely no guarantee that it’ll work out as fun and games. In which case, you’re golden.

3. Grow Facility Chief Operations Officer

There are business-minded folks who’ve found they can be part of the grow house without ever putting their hands in the actual soil. But managing a multilayer cannabis organization can still be dirty work.

Tracking sales, supervising employees and assuring quality control from seed to packaging to distribution is no easy feat. The COO needs

So if you have serious business chops and think you have what it takes to hobnob with politicians, ride out dramatic market-price swings and keep absolutely current with the ever changing regulations in this burgeoning industry, then you may have just found your newest business venture. Good luck.

4. Marijuana Edibles Chef

Spending the day making gummies, brownies, cookies and other baked goods might sound like the easiest job in the world. Not to mention a top-notch hoot.

But having what it takes to be a marijuana edibles chef means more than just stirring the cannabis into the batter. This ain’t your mother’s kitchen.

While technically the marijuana IS just another ingredient, you need to have a rock solid understanding of the plant itself. Then mix that in with a firm grasp of the business, blend in an undying passion for the work and then top it all off with an awareness of ALL the legalities, and you’ve got the makings of a marijuana edibles chef.

Not so easy, is it?

5. Marketing Field Manager

Have you ever been to a 420-friendly yoga class? If so, there was likely a marketing field manager behind arranging it.

Those in cannabis marketing wear many hats. But their biggest one (let’s say, sombrero) involves creating brand awareness by connecting consumers with cannabis products while complying with legal cannabis’s tough regulations.

As a marketing field manager, you’ll be right in the trenches. You’re out there measuring and recording real-time reactions from people using the product. Armed with this information, you make informed and valuable marketing decisions that will help determine the direction of future products. So if you’re more of a behind-the-scenes sort with a preference for a single hat, you need not apply.

6. Cannabis Lawyer

Cannabis-focused law firms are in high (no pun intended) demand.

Okay. Obviously, you can’t just jump into this job without already being a lawyer. We really hope that went without saying. And yet, for legal reasons, we said it.

Anyhow, cannabis lawyers are instrumental in setting up and establishing a marijuana business. They know everything from fund-raising to employment issues, structuring to government compliance. What we more affectionately term “the ins, outs and loopholes.”

If you’re already lawyering and are ALL about establishing a state-legal and professional cannabis industry – a notion that a mere ten years ago would be the conjuring of an LSD trip – then this could be your new focus. Plus, the more chill environment may well render your suits and ties useless.

Will You Be Part of the Revolution?

Obviously, you don’t need to have one of these cool jobs in the cannabis industry to be part of the revolution for change.

Cannabis is finally appearing in a brand new light. And it’s an exciting time to be in the industry – whether you’re on the production side, the distribution side or the consumer side.

All are welcome.

Greenhouse Marijuana Dispensary of Walled Lake is now hiring!

Owner of Greenhouse Jerry Millen has made it his goal to break the stigma surrounding marijuana dispensaries and he’s interested in hiring budtenders, team leaders, receptionists and an intake person.

Millen said he’s currently looking for six to eight budtenders. Interested applicants should have cannabis experience and/or customer service experience but will receive on-the-job training from manufacturers and cannabis professionals.

Budtenders are responsible for interacting with customers face to face, recommending products, and explaining the difference between strains. The average budtender starts at 13 dollars an hour but depending on experience their pay could be higher.

Millen is also looking for a couple of team leaders. A team leader oversees the running of budtenders on a day to day basis. They must have a large amount of cannabis knowledge as well as experience in the industry. The average team leader makes about 50k a year.

As for an intake person, Millen said he doesn’t currently know what the average pay is, but he would negotiate with interested parties and conclude an amount depending on experience. The intake person would oversee inventory within the dispensary.

Outside of working with the product itself, Millen is looking for two to three receptionists as well. Receptionists at Greenhouse don’t need cannabis experience but will gain experience on the job. Receptionists start at 10 plus dollars an hour depending on experience, and with hard work, they can possibly move up at Greenhouse to become a budtender.

People interested in becoming a budtender, team leader, receptionist or intake person at Greenhouse of Walled Lake can apply on their website at https://greenhousewalledlake.com/applynow/.

Applicants can also email resumes, certifications and cover letters to info@greenhouseofwalledlake.com.

With California legalizing recreational marijuana use, the United States is planning to drastically increase the number of marijuana-related jobs. Sean Williams of The Motley Fool said the legal marijuana industry is among the fastest-growing in the United States. In fact, he said, “You could rightly say there’s a “canna-verse” out there that’s probably going unnoticed by most of the American public and investors.”

Williams reported that by 2021, BDS Analytics is estimating U.S. employment within the cannabis industry will more than double to 292,000 people. He said this is roughly a 25 percent compound annual growth rate in American cannabis related jobs, which is surprising considering marijuana is still classified as a Schedule I substance.

The United States isn’t the only country planning to increase jobs in the cannabis industry. Williams said he expects Canada to become the new marijuana job mecca. He said Canada legalized medical marijuana in 2001 and is currently in the process of reviewing legislature that would legalize recreational marijuana use by August 2018. He predicts Canada may become the first developed country in the world to support adult-use of marijuana.

Todd Campbell of The Motley Fool said if you’re looking to invest in a marijuana stock, a Canadian company named Canopy Growth may be in a perfect position to gain profit from legalizing marijuana. Canopy Growth contributes to 30 percent of the countries medical marijuana market and Campbell believes if Canada’s plans are a success, investments in production should allow the company to reward investors with significant growth.

The Founder and CEO of Cannabis At Work Alison McMahon said she approximates 150,000 jobs are expected to be added to Canada’s cannabis industry over the next couple of years.
