If you’ve heard the buzz around the cannabis industry, then you know that many recreational marijuana businesses are struggling.

With a glut of product and falling prices as a result, companies are attempting to stay afloat in the midst of closures and layoffs. So the fact that STIIIZY Ferndale is looking to hire is a bright light among it all.

And potential employees are being offered up to $18 per hour plus benefits.

What’s Happening With Cannabis?

Plummeting cannabis prices are wreaking havoc with not just cannabis growers and retailers, but also ancillary companies. Tech companies and delivery operators are shedding employees.

Part of the issue is that marijuana products are typically taxed at a far higher rate than most other goods. So on top of the challenges of much lower marijuana prices, these companies are trying everything they can to stay afloat.

Some are leaving retail to focus on cultivation. Others are opening consumption lounges to drive business back into their stores. Most are offering steep discounts that take a bite out of their profits. It’s a bloodbath.

That’s not the case for California-based STIIIZY though.

What Is STIIIZY?

STIIIZY is a lifestyle brand that prides itself on providing “cannabis for the culture.” But more than that, it also manufactures and sells skateboard decks, a clothing line, and cannabis paraphernalia with the STIIZY logo.

On August 27th, they opened their first store outside of California. The first 100 customers were rewarded with either a free STIIIZY Ferndale engraved giant bong or an engraved battery, as well as a STIIIZY Detroit shirt. Others enjoyed different promotional items, deep discounts, free food, and refreshments.

The STIIIZY consumer experience ensures customers who come through their doors have no wait time in the lobby. Rather they’re able to go immediately into the store after check-in and begin exploring the vast selection of STIIIZY and other name brand products.

They are then served by one of the more than 60 STIIIZY budtenders in a safe and efficient no-touch atmosphere while being provided the best products, value, and prices in the state of Michigan.

STIIIZY Ferndale Is Looking to Hire

And now STIIIZY Cannabis Company needs to hire 200 workers immediately for their manufacturing facility located in Orion Township. This is great news for those in the cannabis industry who may have been laid off elsewhere and want to get on board with a revolutionary “national” company with some serious chops.

The positions that need to be filled are associate positions where workers will be responsible for producing blunts, joints, and pods. The facility is currently expanding to include the production of gummies and other products. STIIIZY is offering up to $18 per hour along with benefits after 90 days and the need is immediate.

If you’re interested, check out the hiring event on Saturday, September 17th at Ferndale Maize Manufacturing Facility at 163 Premier Drive in Orion Township, MI. The event runs from 10am to 1pm.

Please send resumes to mioffice@shrynegroup.com or call (248) 805-4239.

Curious About Other Happenings?

Now that you know that STIIIZY Ferndale is looking to hire, you may be able to either re-enter the industry or start brand new.

And if you’re always on the lookout for new information about what’s happening in the world of cannabis, keep checking back with our blog.

You might be wondering, what is STIIIZY?

So glad you asked. In a nutshell, STIIIZY is a lifestyle brand that prides itself on providing “cannabis for the culture.” But more than that, it also manufactures and sells skateboard decks, a clothing line, and cannabis paraphernalia with the STIIZY logo.

Given its popularity in California, it’s no surprise that the STIIIZY grand opening in Ferndale, Michigan, was a massive success.

STIIIZY Grand Opening in Ferndale Is a First

The 7,000 square foot flagship store in Ferndale is the first one outside of California. So why did they choose Ferndale?

When STIIIZY debuted in Los Angeles, thousands of customers lined up. With Michigan being one of the hottest and fastest growing cannabis markets in the United States, they chose Ferndale because of its ability to draw people. And it was a good choice. Over 2,000 people showed up for the grand opening last Saturday, August 27th.

STIIIZY Ferndale at 642 E. Nine Mile provides an atmosphere that is unique and second to none. During the grand opening, they featured custom giveaways, promotional discounts, free food and refreshments, and the rap stylings of Tory Lanez, Icewear Vezzo, Snapdogg, and others who were on hand to promote their products.

Plus, the first 100 customers were rewarded with either a free STIIIZY Ferndale engraved giant bong or an engraved battery, as well as a STIIIZY Detroit shirt. Others enjoyed different promotional items, deep discounts, free food, and refreshments.

What to Expect When You Shop STIIIZY

The STIIIZY consumer experience in Ferndale will ensure customers who come through their doors have no wait time in the lobby. Rather they’ll be able to go immediately into the store after check-in and begin exploring the vast selection of STIIIZY and other name brand products.

Customers will be served by one of the more than 60 STIIIZY budtenders in a safe and efficient no-touch atmosphere while being provided the best products, value, and prices in the state of Michigan.

STIIIZY representative Ryan Jundt puts it this way, “The STIIIZY cannabis shopping experience in our state-of-the-art, one-of-a-kind Michigan facility will be controlled, efficient, and fun. We welcome one and all and we always put our customer’s satisfaction and safety first. From the get-go, STIIIZY will be very involved in Ferndale and the surrounding communities; looking for charitable opportunities to give back.”

Sounds like a win-win situation.

Imagine living a life where you must endure seizures nearly every couple minutes and usually during sleep. Doesn’t sound like much of a life.

But this how it was for one Onaway, Michigan, resident when her epilepsy was at its worst. Doctors prescribed medications, but she was never free from the seizures.

Then she met an amazing caregiver who tinkered with a low-THC, high-CBD cannabis oil that immediately lessened her seizures. At this point, she’s been free of seizures for nine months.

She calls this caregiver her guardian angel. His name is Ben Kosala and he now has plans to open the first Michigan marijuana microbusiness in November.

What Is a Michigan Marijuana Microbusiness?

Kosala, 33, never imagined he’d go into the marijuana business when he first started planting seeds back in 2009. But eleven years later, he can proudly say he’s the first in the state to be granted a microbusiness license.

What does that mean though?

Well, consider the microbrewery. Back in the early days of craft beer, if you wanted, say, a Dragon’s Milk from New Holland Brewery, you had to drive to the microbrewery in Holland, Michigan. It wasn’t available in every other grocery or liquor store like it is now.

A marijuana microbusiness works in much the same way. The special license allows for a purely vertically-integrated cannabusiness where the product is grown, processed, and sold at only that single retail location. A microbusiness is a stand alone business that can’t intermingle with other aspects of the recreational market.

Kosala is preparing to open at a tiny 500-square-foot storefront in an industrial park. And the locals are thrilled.

A Passionate Caregiver

Kosala started growing so he could provide himself medicine. Soon, he was helping others. And before he knew it, he was looking into how he could use his skills, as well as his knowledge and love of cannabis to become a caregiver.

His medical marijuana patient list maxed out at six patients and he grew a maximum of 72 plants. Yet, he began to have a sense that the caregiver network wouldn’t last forever. And he was right.

While state regulators initially allowed caregivers to sell their excess medical marijuana to licensed businesses, there’s a plan in place to eliminate caregiver product entirely from licensed markets this month.

Getting Approved for a Michigan Marijuana Microbusiness

Kosala approached the Onaway City Council a year ago to get approval to open a marijuana microbusiness in the 800-resident town.

Before deciding to apply, he had to determine whether microbusinesses were even allowed by the municipality. At the moment, municipalities fall into one of three categories.

A “prohibited” municipality is one that has, at least for now, opted out. And “allowed” municipality allows for the municipality to limit the number of businesses within its boundaries, including microbusinesses. There’s specific information about zoning districts and distance requirements.

Finally, a “no decision” municipality hasn’t officially opted out to become prohibited. So it is possible to open a microbusiness there. Interested parties are encouraged to be open and transparent to ensure that they’re able to find the right location allows them to acquire a microbusiness license there.

The town of Onaway passed a new ordinance in October of 2019 to allow the business.

The microbusiness license is actually a conglomeration of various license functions. It allows growers to cultivate up to 150 plants, process the harvest, and sell the resulting products in their own storefront.

Sound good?

Well, if you’re considering this route, know that it’s a major investment. For Kosala, the application and licensing fees alone were $19,000. He invested a couple hundred thousand dollars beyond that.

Kosala’s Vision

Kosala is certain he’ll be able to operate a successful commercial business. At this point, he has plans to add on an extract lab to produce extractions for edibles. Most of all, he says he wants to focus on the “sale of consistent, quality, top-shelf craft cannabis.”

The medical marijuana patients who gave him his start also believe in Kosala and the success of his venture. And he’s committed to keep helping them through it.

As for the woman who’s been blissfully free from seizures for nine months? She’s finally able to drive again. “It’s probably the best thing that’s happened to me,” she says.

It’s hard to argue that endorsement.

Do You Currently Have a Cannabis Business?

If so, you may have your sights set on acquiring your own Michigan marijuana microbusiness some day.

Some of that will be contingent on the success of your current business though. So if you feel that your marketing and public relations efforts aren’t paying off, then contact us.

With so many new dispensaries popping up every week in Southeastern Michigan, it can be hard to differentiate what makes one more special than another.

That’s not the case with Ann Arbor’s Huron View.

When you walk into this small dispensary on Packard Road, you’ll know you’ve found something truly unique.

Their storefront window decals refer to the dispensary as both The Huron View Center and Huron View Kind Solutions. And kindness is immediately apparent.

A Mother-Daughter Team

Christina Montague is the only woman of color in the state who owns a dispensary. She was a Washtenaw County commissioner, as well as a social worker at Mitchell Elementary in Ann Arbor. The former role gave her the savvy to get the dispensary off the ground. The latter, however, is indicative of her caring and compassionate nature.

Making a positive contribution to the community has been her focus since day one. And though Huron View may be one of the smaller dispensaries in town, they likely have the biggest heart.

“We are different than everybody else,” says Teesha Montague, Christina Montague’s adult daughter who has a hand in the business as well. “We just want an opportunity to show that.”

In addition to the work she does at the dispensary, Teesha organizes uplifting and educational events around the state that bring people together from many different walks of life. She hopes to keep highlighting the benefits of CBD and marijuana to help those struggling with various symptoms and conditions.

Helping Others Is the Primary Focus

“If someone’s having a hard day, we just want to help them out. We want them to leave with a smile,” says Teesha. And it starts the minute you walk in the door when you’re greeted with, “Welcome to the family!”

It’s not just a line though. At Huron View, they really do see every person who walks through the door as family. And they aim to help every individual as they would a treasured family member.

Through their seniors/veterans Meals and Meds program, they do more than simply deliver medical marijuana. Christina and Teesha actively connect with businesses to find those that are willing to donate free meals to senior citizens and veterans. The Montagues and their crew are also willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to wash dishes, vacuum, pick up groceries, or handle other chores for this population.

Just as they would for their own flesh and blood family.

They also take the time to learn each individual’s personalized cannabis experience and then design “Sparks of Joy” boxes specifically for that person. For example, if someone says they don’t like edibles and prefer flower, but they struggle with severe anxiety, they’ll create an affordable box geared toward those conditions and preferences.

The help doesn’t stop there though.

Fighting for Social Equity

On a broader level, Christina Montague would like to see more social equity in the cannabis industry in Washtenaw County.

The Marijuana Regulatory Agency’s (MRA) social equity program aims “to promote and encourage participation in the marijuana industry by people from communities that have been disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition and enforcement and to positively impact those communities.”

Unfortunately, Ypsilanti is the only qualifying municipality in Washtenaw County for this program.

So she’s pushing to get Washtenaw County to consider efforts similar to those she’s seen presented in other cities such as Detroit. This would allow the county to establish a cannabis business development fund to help residents get into the recreational marijuana industry.

It would do this by offsetting some of the licensing fees that are so prohibitively expensive for those who are most in need of social equity.

A Dispensary That Cares

Ann Arbor’s Huron View believes in running a business guided by compassion and caring. In other words, from the heart.

As Teesha says, “We just want to give back and do some good while we’re here.” And they’re doing just that.

So if you’re in Ann Arbor, be sure to stop in and support their efforts. You’re sure to become a member of the Huron View family while you’re there!

And for all the latest on the cannabis industry in Southeast Michigan (and beyond) keep checking back with our blog.

Is all of this isolation and solitude starting to get to you?

What can we do? This act of social responsibility may feel punitive but it’s a necessary evil right now.

Saddle up, y’all. We’re in for even more. Today, Michigan passed a shelter in place order that will close everything deemed non-essential.

And if you’re a cannabis enthusiast, you’re probably wondering, is cannabis considered essential in Michigan?

For those who rely on medical marijuana to ease their symptoms, the answer is a definitive yes.

The Path of COVID-19 through Michigan’s Cannabis Industry

In the past couple of weeks, people here in Michigan have been stock-piling marijuana just in case the state went into lockdown.

This was a boon for dispensaries and other businesses that saw a serious uptick in sales.

Then last week, the governor started placing restrictions on what could be open. Dispensaries still made the cut, but they started curbside pickup, limited the number of people inside their stores at one time, and imposed stricter sanitary standards to protect medical users.

But what does today’s order mean for cannabis businesses?

Is Marijuana Deemed Essential?

Last week, dispensaries appealed to Gov. Whitmer to deem cannabis an “essential” so that they won’t have to shut down.

In their letter, they called on the governor to give doctors permission to “evaluate patients and write recommendations for both new medical marijuana patients and renewing patients using telecommunications.”

They believe continued access to cannabis during this time is pertinent and should therefore be considered essential. Especially given the fact that patients with chronic pain or seizures, as well as pediatric patients, have reduced or even replaced pharmaceuticals (such as opiates) with medical marijuana.

As marketing and public relations experts in the cannabis industry, we were predicting that – at the very least – medical marijuana patients would still have access to their medicine.

We were pleased when we heard the governor’s final decision.

So Is Cannabis Considered Essential in Michigan?

The answer is yes. Dispensaries will be permitted to continue their curbside operations for BOTH medical and recreational marijuana.

Among those singing their praises to the governor for this decision is Jerry Millen of the Greenhouse in Walled Lake.

“Governor Whitmer is doing a great job caring for people throughout the state of Michigan,” said Millen. “Giving medical marijuana patients and others the opportunity to continue obtaining various cannabis products for their needs is so very important. On behalf of all of my patients and other customers, we owe her a great deal of gratitude during this difficult time for all of Michigan’s residents.”

Although the law goes into effect at midnight tonight, you can begin ordering today at greenhousemi.com. The entire back parking lot at the facility will be converted into an area for pick up.

The Greenhouse is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 8pm, and Sunday 10am to 6pm.

Thank You, Governor Whitmer

We’re also grateful that the governor responded to the question, is cannabis considered essential in Michigan with a resounding yes.

After all, not only do medical users rely on it as their medicine, but many casual consumers use it to help them sleep and/or manage their anxiety.

And right now, we can use all the help we can get.

Are you planning to own at State of Michigan licensed marijuana facility? Or do you already own one?

Either way, it’s in your best interest to attend the upcoming cannabusiness seminar at Cobo Center.

It’s going to be essential to help you maximize your earning and boost your operational success.

But it’ll give you much more than that.

Cannabusiness Seminar at Cobo Center Has So Much to Offer

Opening and running a facility is no easy feat.

When working in this extremely highly regulated market, compliance is essential to avoid local penalties from the State as well as the IRS. And they’re going to start auditing as early as 2020.

If you’re found to be not in compliance, you’ll be facing some heavy penalties that could easily put you right out of business.

That’s why Cannabis Legal Group is hosting this seminar on September 27th. It’s targeted for the cannabis industry licensees, and those hoping to be licensed.

And they know their stuff.

Cannabis Legal Group of Royal Oak, founded by Attorney Barton W. Morris Jr., is the premier law firm in the State of Michigan when it comes to offering legal guidance in the cannabis industry.

Mr. Morris has a remarkable track record in the cannabis space, which he has been part of for over a decade. He is a member of the Board of the Marijuana Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, and advises State of Michigan decision-makers on matters relating to Cannabis Law.

This will be the 12th all-day seminar Cannabis Legal Group has presented over the last several years. Each has been a heavily attended and successful events.

What You Can Expect

Areas to be covered include:

How to Get Your Recreational (Adult-Use) License and Overcome Roadblocks with your Municipality

Best Practices and Advice for Maintaining MRA Regulatory Compliance

Raising Private Equity Capital for Expansion and Business Mergers/Acquisitions

The Importance of Due Diligence and Best Practices for Acquiring a Cannabusiness

Common Cannabis Tax Consequences and How to Minimize and Eliminate Issues at Audit Time

Trademark and Protect Your Brand, or Risk Someone Infringing on or Stealing It

Al Harrington, Founder of Cannabis Giant, Viola Will Talk About His Success Story and the Cannabis Industry

Wait. Al Harrington? Isn’t that the former NBA star Al Harrington?

Yep. It is.

Former NBA Star in the Cannabis Industry?

There are more and more athletes riding the cannabis wave of success. And Harrington’s entry into the business was through helping his grandmother.

When Harrington was playing for the Denver Nuggets, marijuana was legal in Colorado. One weekend, his grandmother was in town. As she was unpacking, she set out all of her daily medications for glaucoma and diabetes.

She experienced a lot of pain. But what she lamented most was her inability to read the Bible because of it.

Harrington had become aware of the benefits of cannabis for pain, so he obtained some marijuana and then asked his grandma to try it.

She was afraid she’d get busted, but he assured her that she wouldn’t.

He set it out, then went to his room for a nap. When he awakened, he found his grandma in her room. She was reading her Bible and crying.

“I’m healed,” she told him.

Harrington was sold. And now he’s a cannabis tycoon – with 70-plus employees in four states: California, Oregon, Colorado and Michigan. But he’s not in it for the money. He feels it’s important to educate people on the merits of cannabis.

“At the end of the day — and I want you to put this in there, because it’s the truth — I’m not doing it for the money,” he said in an interview with IndyStar. “Money will come and go, but I’m more focused on service and products and patients. If we take care of them, the money will be there. I get more joy from someone calling or hitting me on Twitter or Instagram (and saying): ‘My mom tried your product and this happened.’ Or: ‘My grandmother tried cannabis for first time and this is the best she’s felt in years!’ I get way more joy from that, than from looking at a bank account.”

So that’s why he’ll be at this event on September 27th.

Remember when marijuana was legalized?

Yeah, it was only five months ago. And since that time, many communities have voted to outright ban the sale of marijuana.

But there’s been a lot of back and forth in some communities about whether they want provisioning centers within their borders.

One such community is Chesterfield Township.

Back in December, they were among the growing number of Michigan communities moving to ban marijuana establishments within their municipality.

So to address these concerns, the Chesterfield Township Cannabis Licensing Work Group was formed.

The Purpose of the Chesterfield Township Cannabis Licensing Work Group

Once Proposal 1 passed, Chesterfield Township Supervisor Dan Acciavatti appointed a cannabis committee that would form community policy for the board to consider the operation of marijuana facilities in the township.

“This does not by any way, shape or form mean that Chesterfield will not participate with this program,” Acciavatti said last fall, regarding the move to ban marijuana facilities. “This can be revisited or relooked at.”

Then in February, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs’ Bureau of Marijuana Regulation put out a call for those interested in taking part in adult-use marijuana stakeholder work groups being facilitated for licensees, attorneys, municipalities and individuals or businesses.

The purpose of the work groups is to gather information – seeking input on the rules that would govern the licensing of facilities.

Chesterfield Township felt it was important to have a seat at that table to provide input and communicate their concerns.

And this Monday, April 22nd, they will be holding an event at 6pm at the Municipal Building at 47275 Sugarbush Road – specifically for this purpose.

Employing the Expertise of Barton W. Morris, Jr.

When Brad Kersten, head of the Chesterfield Township Cannabis Committee, understood his township was serious about potentially licensing provisioning centers, grow houses, and possibly other cannabis Industry entities, he decided to reach out to the leading legal expert in the state.

So he contacted Barton W. Morris, Jr., founder and CEO of Cannabis Legal Group in Royal Oak.

Morris has a remarkable track record in the field since he first became involved in 2008, when the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act was enacted. In addition, he is a member on the Board of The Marijuana Law Section of The State Bar of Michigan.

“If we are going to consider opting in, we decided it was best for our Cannabis Committee, as well as the community, to hear from Barton W. Morris, Jr.,” said Kersten, who is also the former Chesterfield Township Public Safety Director.

And Morris was happy to comply.

“Chief Kersten graciously invited me to do an informational presentation regarding Medical and Recreational Marijuana Licensing,” said Morris.

“Having been involved with numerous committees on a local and statewide platform, it will be my honor to meet with the committee and residents and happily answer their questions.”

Interested and concerned Chesterfield Township residents alike should strongly consider attending the event this Monday.

Are You Facing the Challenges of Running a Cannabis Business?

There are definitely challenges in this industry that don’t exist in others.

But marketing your cannabis business doesn’t have to be one of them. Contact us today to help you reevaluate your current strategies.

And as long-time supporters of the cannabis industry, we salute the Chesterfield Township Cannabis Licensing Work Group for taking the time to be open and informed before making decisions.

When recreational marijuana became officially legal in Michigan two months ago, there was much rejoicing.

The rejoicing came to quick halt when the revelers realized that the state wouldn’t be issuing licenses to marijuana businesses until the beginning of 2020.

And they were soon left wondering how they could get access to pot.

Enter the entrepreneurial minded folks who are creating some pretty not-so-legal loopholes for gifting marijuana to these crushed souls.

Here’s how.

Candy and T-Shirts – At Serious Cost

It’s clear that there’s a big demand for pot. People WANT it. And although there are all sorts of things that are illegal when it comes to Michigan’s marijuana legalization, it’s totally legal to give away or transfer up to 2.5 ounces of weed.

Provided there is no compensation, of course.

But the supply side is struggling. And there’s currently no system in place to provide for the retail sale and delivery of adult recreational marijuana.

Soooooooo…

Some people have decided to establish “marijuana gifting service plans” to weather this one year weed drought.

Still, 2.5 ounces of weed just isn’t that much. And it’s pretty tough to establish any sort of lucrative business with such a limited supply. Especially since it’s illegal to advertise these gifts.

To get around this, owners of these businesses will sell a piece of candy for $100 or a t-shirt for $300 and then “gift” some marijuana with them.

In cases such as these, it’s incredibly obvious what’s going on. The candy isn’t filled with gold and the shirts aren’t limited edition concert t-shirts. But the old rules of supply and demand dictate that if people want it badly enough, they’ll pay for it. And so they do.

Reputable lawyers in the cannabis biz don’t recommend this route, but that hasn’t stopped many of these operations.

The Not-So-Legal Loophole of Medical Marijuana

An online Ann Arbor chocolate business launched on December 6th with the tagline, “Buy some chocolate, get some weed.” The company garnered attention on reddit and sold out in three days. Whether this can be considering “advertising” or “promoting” is dicey, since reddit is a discussion forum.

Meanwhile, the owner did $1,700 in business in those three days. Even though the business itself had no cannabis.

Customers over 21 paid $10 to $15 for the chocolate and then were offered a gift of marijuana by the delivery driver – who was a medical marijuana patient. The amount and type of marijuana was up to the driver’s discretion.

This worked because it remains unclear on whether medical patients can gift marijuana to non-patients or if caregivers can gift marijuana to people who aren’t their patients. This will probably have to be decided eventually through an advisory from the state attorney general. Or possibly through future court cases.

But until all of this becomes clearer, Michigan is clearly in the Wild West era of marijuana legalization. For now, there’s just no lawful way to buy recreational weed.

We Are in Transition

And it seems that everyone from the courts to law enforcement to the legislature recognize this. Thus, there have certainly been allowances when it comes to these not-so-legal loopholes for gifting marijuana.

But it’s only a matter of time before things get whipped into shape.

In the meantime, if you’re looking to boost your public relations and marketing efforts for your legal cannabis business, contact us to see how we can help you during this “hiatus.”

Take advantage of this time and become a serious force in 2020.
