New York Senator, Chuck Schumer, introduced a new bill to help the progression of recreational marijuana. He introduced a new bill to hopefully federally decriminalize marijuana. Federally, the bill wouldn’t make marijuana fully legal, but it would be a significant step towards cooling down national marijuana prohibition laws.

The bill was introduced on June 26th and his aim is to completely remove marijuana and CBD to DEA’s list of controlled substances. By removing marijuana from the DEA’s list of controlled substances, it’ll lesser the consequences of getting caught with the drug as well as moving the repercussions to a much less severe category. Although the drug will still be federally illegal, having it be decriminalized will lessen the severity of the possible consequences of getting caught.

Not only does Schumer’s proposal plan to decriminalize marijuana, but the bill, if passed, will also have many benefits to consumers and business owners. The bill plans to:

Focus on highway safety programs and other national health programs by setting $750 million aside to help these programs along.

Set aside funds to help minorities start up marijuana related businesses, specifically people of color and women.

Allow the national treasury department to control and regulate specific parts of cannabis marketing and advertising.

Curate $100 million in grants to help expunge criminal records for those of whom were convicted with crimes related to marijuana.

The point of this bill is so that those who are involved are able to shed light on problems that are much bigger than the regulation of cannabis. Sponsors of the bill Senators Bernie Sanders, Tim Kaine and Tammy Duckworth are all hoping to accomplish much bigger problems that surround cannabis such as how to create boundaries when it comes to drug policing and racial disparities as well as how weed laws are enforced. Seeing that drug policing and racial profiling has historically been a major issue in the U.S., Senator Duckworth stated, “Far too many American are currently incarcerated for marijuana related offenses. They are disproportionately people of color, despite the fact that African Americans and Caucasians use marijuana at the same rate.”

There is a much bigger plan with this proposed bill than to just decriminalize marijuana and that is to help save lives by producing jobs and to try and stop racial and gender profiling. Schumer’s proposed bill is only the beginning of something that could potentially be historically monumental.

One would think that most anti marijuana groups are exactly that: anti marijuana. A political action committee called, The Committee to Keep Pot out of Neighborhoods and Schools dropped their original initiative of keeping pot illegal and off the streets and instead are pushing for marijuana legalization. Although this committee is now fighting for legality of marijuana, they are now pushing for strict regulation if the law passes. The committee is hoping that if there is regulation, then recreational use will be as stringent as the medical marijuana industry.

Committee spokesperson, Mark Fisk, is coming to grips with the reality of marijuana becoming legal for recreational use. The legalization of marijuana, “Will be a reality in Michigan. Initiatives have been approved in 29 states and polling has been very strong.” Fisk also stated, “Regardless of our feelings on the issue, the question now is how to regulate and control recreational marijuana.” The want for reform and regulation on recreational marijuana use may be becoming a bit extreme. Many republicans, along with this committee, want to see recreational use just as strict as medical marijuana use, but if marijuana is open to the public, how is this strict regulation going to work?

There is a time to stop fighting a reality and the time, at least for The Committee to Keep Pot out of Neighborhoods and Schools, is now. The more legislature waits, the more people try and shut this oncoming reality of legalization out, the more unnecessary arrests happen and lives are ruined. The Michigan legislature has until June 5 to decide what they’re going to do with the marijuana proposal.
