With January 1st right around the corner, many of us create a list of new year’s resolutions. If a THC detox is on that list for you, you may be wondering the best route.

While there are plenty of products that claim to quickly flush THC from your system, your best bet is to detox weed naturally. Not only is it the most effective way but the steps involved lend to better overall health.

So it’s two gifts in one.

How to Detox THC Naturally

For all the good that THC does, sometimes the body just needs a break.

So whether you’re clearing your system to reset, or you have an upcoming drug test, it’s important to understand that it will take about six weeks to become fully THC-free. Given that the steps to detoxing naturally will also boost better health, many of the following steps may be habits you incorporate into your daily life.

So without further ado…

Stop Using THC

We really hope this goes without saying. But to get THC completely out of your system, you can’t merely cut back on cannabis consumption. While yes, you may ease into clearing it out of your system by cutting back on the tokes or gummies, eventually you have to stop consuming it altogether.

Shift Your Diet

Detox is going to be more effective if you’re not retaining water. Unfortunately, foods high in delicious ingredients such as sugar, fat, and sodium do just that. Having just come off the holiday festivities, you may be keenly aware of that right now.

They also slow your metabolism. And THC metabolites can’t be shed if you’re dragging around, heavy with water. What will help though is a diet that’s rich in hydrating foods like fruits, veggies, lean meats, and leafy greens. In fact, greens can increase your metabolism and help to flush out your system faster. So if you’ve never had good relations with spinach and kale, it may be time to change your perspective.

Be sure to add in some fiber too. The best sources are beans, peanuts, legumes, and whole grains. These are classic detox foods that will also help to stabilize your mood and lend to better sleep. (This is especially key if you’re currently using THC to help you sleep.)

Hydrate

When you think of the words ‘cleansing’ and ‘flushing’, doesn’t water immediately come to mind? (Yes.) So it makes sense that drinking plenty of water is going to help you do just that. Staying hydrated is also going to promote better organ function and boost your immunity – which is no small task these days.

Plain water isn’t the only source of hydration. You can swap out some water for herbal teas. Okay, it’s not exactly a café mocha or whiskey sour. But if you opt for teas with tons of antioxidants or with liver-cleansing properties, you’ll get some flavor along with added benefits.

Get Moving

Getting up off the couch in these cold, dark months to exercise can feel punitive. Especially when there’s a perfectly good bag of chips or cookies nearby. But since our bodies store THC in fat cells, decreasing them means expedited detoxing. And that means cutting calories and exercising.

Once you get past the stultifying weight of procrastination and into the gym or studio, your body will gift you with anandamide – the natural endocannabinoid it produces. Production increases during exercise and it’s the source of the ‘runner’s high.’

Be Kind to Yourself

Being kind to ourselves sounds like it should be so much easier than it is. And if this is already a difficult task for you, it’s important to understand that detox can exacerbate negative emotions. Knowing this going in can help you to prepare by carving out requisite time for yourself.

As mentioned above, exercise helps. If you’ve wanted to explore meditation, this could be a good time. Schedule some relaxing baths, time with friends, walks in nature, strumming your guitar, or whatever activities you enjoy.

The habits you form during your time of detoxing may just become regular ones that you’ll carry long after detoxing. How cool is that?

Happy New Year!

If you’re choosing to detox THC naturally this year, we wish you the best of luck. Sometimes a little reset is what you need.

That said, if you’re a cannabis business owner looking to reset your marketing and public relations goals this year, contact us today.

We have nearly a decade of experience and will put your positive exposure at the top of our resolutions list.

Since cannabis continues to be illegal on the federal level, you may now find yourself face-to-face with a drug test for an upcoming job (not something we have to worry about as cannabis marketing experts).

Or maybe you’re considering quitting for a while and taking a tolerance break so you can start over again brand new.

Whatever the case, you’ll need to do a cannabis detox. And there are some ways that are more effective than others.

The Down and Dirty on Cannabis in Your System

Fact: THC can show up in your urine for anywhere between a couple days to 30 days (or, in some cases, even longer). Why is there such a wide discrepancy? It all depends on your body and your lifestyle.

It’s going to take longer to clear THC from someone who’s a hardcore regular consumer, overweight with poor eating habits, and never exercises than from someone who doesn’t use as frequently, has a higher metabolism, and eats well and exercises.

Also, the cleanse will not happen as quickly if you’re smoker. Of any kind. So based on those factors, you can get some sort of idea of how long it might take for you.

You Will Need to Abstain

Whether you like it or not, the only true way you can flush THC from your system is by not putting it in there for a while. There’s no way around that.

If you’re a hard hitter, once you stop using you may experience irritability, headaches, insomnia, anxiety and depression. These may be signs that you’re experiencing withdrawal – but given that marijuana is often prescribed to ease these conditions, it could just as easily be a return of the symptoms.

No matter how little or much you consume, you should plan on it taking six weeks to completely clear THC from your system. This is especially critical if you’re getting tested.

There are products on the market aimed at detoxification and they can help. But you’re absolute best bet is to do an all-natural detox where you stop using cannabis and follow these guidelines:

Drink Plenty of Water and Tea

When considering what to drink, let water and tea top the list. It’s important to understand though that you’re not trying to flush out your system. Drinking excessive water isn’t going to clear you out faster. The idea is to stay hydrated to help your body expel toxins.

Tea is also a helpful detox beverage. Pick teas like dandelion or milk thistle that have high levels of antioxidants.

Get Off the Couch

The primary place THC is stored in the body is in fat cells. That’s why people who are overweight or have a low metabolism have a much harder time flushing it from their bodies.

So kick up your metabolism and start exercising. Get some cardio and weight training going to boost your metabolism and speed up the detox process.

Another big plus to exercise is the production of endorphins which will provide a natural high transition from the cannabis high. Plus, exercise is just plain good for you! So this could be a good time to make it a regular part of your life.

Steer Toward Healthier Foods

While you’re building muscle and losing fat through exercise, try shifting away from foods high in salt, sugar, and fat. Yeah, we know they’re delicious. And we’re not saying ditch them altogether. Just know that they increase water retention and slow metabolism – the exact opposite effect you want for cleansing the system of THC.

So when you can, opt instead for lean meats, fruits, veggies, and especially leafy greens (since they increase metabolism). Whole grains, beans, and legumes will also help to clear the system and provide needed energy. Plus, all of this healthy eating helps to stabilize the system and leave you feeling less of the effects of negative symptoms from the detox.

Ditch the Myths

And now for the bad news.

Things such as cranberry juice, vinegar, and niacin have been purported to clear the system quickly of THC. This is bunk. There is even (mis)information that ingesting bleach can help. Nope. Not true. Calling bullsh*t.

The reality is, detoxing is a lengthy process and there aren’t quick shortcuts.

Nurture Yourself During Cannabis Detox

If you’re preparing to go through a cannabis detox, be kind to yourself. Especially if you’ll be incorporating major lifestyle changes.

This could be a good time to try yoga or meditation, or pick up a new hobby. You may just find this cannabis detox a time to learn and grow.
